How many “low-income” households have retirement savings?

Fewer than 1 in 10 of low-income households have retirement savings. Just 8% of families in the lowest fifth of the income spectrum have any retirement account savings at all, including employer-sponsored plans, according to the Economic Policy Institute. In fact, high-income households are 11 times more likely to have retirement accounts. To be fair, the Social Security formula favors lower-income retirees, but this is still a big savings gap.
